ORIGINAL CAST PROFILES – Carl Frank
Carl Frank was born February, 27 1909.
At various times, Frank joined Adele Ronson (who played Wilma Dearing) as the title character on the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century show (produced and directed by Carlo De Angelo). Frank was joined on the show by sound effects performer Ora Nichols, who provided many of the sounds during the War of the Worlds broadcast. Frank also found himself playing various roles on The Shadow (during both Orson Welles’ and Frank Readick’s stints as the dark detective).
During the War of the Worlds broadcast, Frank portrayed the “Second Radio Announcer” (whose announcements would interrupt a phony program of evening music), and is also credited as “The Stranger/Artilleryman”. If radio audiences could see scenery being chewed, they would certainly bear witness to Frank’s teeth marks on his famous Artilleryman rant with Orson Welle’s character, Richard Pierson.
Frank moved on to a film and television career. Oddly enough, he found himself in television versions of radio classics like Lights Out and Inner Sanctum, shows on which he had performed during their radio-based incarnations.
Frank passed away September 23 1972, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
